My Front Door!

What Your Front Door Says

You are bold, brave, and easily excited.

You are passionate about what you believe.

And you're never afraid to tell people exactly what you think.

You're picky and particular. It's sometimes hard to meet your standards.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Hi Friends!

Just checking in to let you know I'm still alive and kickin'! We've been busy getting our schedule tweaked to work for us as we have resumed our homeschooling with Shane. He started 5th grade this year and we've had so much fun so far! Today's lesson in Heritage Studies, comparing Capitalism to Socialism, was very timely, I thought, considering the political/election climate in which we find ourselves. The picture on the chapter cover sheet showed a family playing Monopoly. At Shane's suggestion, we pulled out the old Monopoly gameboard to find out which one of us made the best capitalist. Well, Shane! He whipped me!

His text book gave a history of the famous board game that I'd like to share with you. I never realized what a "folk" game it really is. I hope you enjoy reading about it as much as we did!

********************************************

(The following is taken from "Doors of Opportunity" Heritage Studies for Christian Schools Second Edition, Bob Jones University Press.)

Do you know how to play the game Monopoly? Players buy property and try to improve it, collecting money from renters and paying taxes. The game teaches, among other things, that you have to pay more taxes when you own more land and that is easy to be ruined by overspending.

The game of Monopoly is something like the real business of buying and selling. People buy property they think will be valuable. They sell property when they need money or when they can make a profit. A profit is an amount that is more than the original cost of something. For example, if you buy a used bicycle for ten dollars and spend five dollars to fix it up and then sell it for twenty dollars, you make a profit of five dollars.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

INVENTING GAMES

The game that became Monopoly was probably invented by Elizabeth Magie Phillips, a woman who wanted to teach children that it was wrong to try to own everything. She called her game The Landlord's Game and had it patented in 1904.

But since The Landlord's Game was never packaged for sale, people in the area who played the game began to make up their own rules and to change some of the names of the places. And they called it Monopoly. Then others, especially college students going home on breaks, took the game to other states. Dan Layman took his new pastime to Indiana. There he made many changes and called the game Finance.

An Indiana woman took the game of Finance to New Jersey, where she and her friends named places on the board after places in Atlantic City---places such as Boardwalk and Marvin Gardens. Then the game came into the hands of Philadelphian Charles Darrow, who made his own board and rules and sold the package to Parker Brothers, a large manufacturer of games and toys.

But the game was not Darrow's invention; it was a folk game that had grown out of Mrs. Phillip's idea. When Parker Brothers discovered Darrow's lie, the company was already making a lot of money on the game. So the owners decided to buy out all other claims to Monopoly, including the original one. Mrs. Phillips got five hundred dollars for her rights to the game that became the world's most popular board game.

The five Olympic rings represent Earth’s continents.
2. What do those colors represent on the Olympic flag?

Nearly 22,000 bearers carried the torch this year.

Russian gymnast Larissa Latynina won 18 Olympic medals.
5. How many of that record number are gold medals?

Today, gold metals are actually made of gilded silver.
6. What was the last year they were made of solid gold?

Answers: 1: 22; 2: Colors in all nations’ flags; 3: 1980 Winter Games (52); 4: Faster, Higher, Stronger; 5: Nine; 6: 1912

I'm so obsessed with the Olympics right now. You may see me here a little more consistently after the closing ceremony this week end. Did anybody see Beach Volleyball dream duet, Misty May and Kerri Walsh whoop up on the Chinese on their home turf? We got the gold!!! The two women were so happy and emotional, jumping and giggling like little girls. So cute! they also took time out to send a shout out to Presdent Bush who had visited them earlier in the week on the sand, taking a lesson or two from them. I also just finished watching the USA women's indoor volleyball team sweep out Cuba in the semi finals!

Here are a few more photos from our road trip to the mountains last month.

A pretty rest stop in North Carolina!

Our first view of mountains in a few years! I think I took this photo in North Carolina.

You just don't see rocks jutting out of hillsides or mountainsides in Florida! I'm always intrigued by the topographical variances from state to state!

I just loved spending time looking at the different types of flowers and scenery at this rest stop. (The variety of the human type are my favorite! LOL)

Mom and Dad strike a pose!

FOUND A PEANUT, FOUND A PEANUT!!!

O.H. M.Y. W.O.R.D.!!! I think that this is really a great description of me! Why, just today, while walking, I had the toughest looking dog ( ENGLISHSTAFFORDSHIRE BULL)mosey right up to me and start licking my hand! At first, I mistook the doggie for a Pit Bull. His owner was right there in his driveway and I'm not a die hard Pit Bull hater, so I wasn't at all afraid. My brother owns one, and his veterinarian owns 3. But back to the quiz, I know for a fact that there are people who avoid me for whatever reason. I think I can be a little overwhelming with my friendliness. Maybe they think I'm an overly friendly Pit Bull! *winks*

You Are A Peanut

You are popular, even with people who tend to have picky taste.

Kids love you, as do dogs. From rednecks to snobs, most people have a place for you in their hearts.

As popular as you are, there are some people who can't be near you.

Don't take it too personally. There's just a few people you rub the wrong way.

Who Am I?

I have taken this fun UNscientific quiz 5 times. On the first try, I did the long version and came out as Che Guevera. God forbid! He shot children and was killed by the CIA on a mountain top!

Second try, I came out as Mother Teresa. I digressed from a murdering communist to a saint! Talk about being bi-polar!

Third try, I really tried to tweak some answers but yet remain true to myself and did the test with a medium amount of questions. Guess who? HITLER!! People I'm all over the map. My hubby said he always knew I was a little extreme! LOL

Fourth try today, long version of test, I'm once again Mother Teresa!

Okay I said, one more try and I'm only doing the short version. I like who I am today, don't you?

Classic Movie I Am Most Like

Wow! If I lived up to this daily, I'd be well pleased! My sis says it does describe me well, so thanks Jungle Mom. I'm touched you see me through such rose colored glasses, especially since you came out as "The Godfather"!!!! LOL
I saw this movie years ago when it first came out. I remember crying alot. Mr. Schindler was allowed to save the lives of a certain amount of Jews during the holocaust. He worked hard to fill each slot. The endingm when he cries over not saling his gold lapel pen to purchase the life of one more Jew is crushing. It makes me wonder how many Christians will have the same sentiment some day over not telling one more about Christ.

Bienvenidos a La Casa de Rios

La Casa De Rios

I found the link to this fun activity at Jungle Mom's blog. I just had to play along!

Based on your drawing and the 10 answers you gave this is a summary of your personality:

Your house tells the world that you ought to be a leader.
You are a freedom lover and a strong person.
You are shy and reserved.
If you've drawn a cross on each of windows, you always want to live alone.
You are very tidy person.
There's nothing wrong with that because you're pretty popular among friends.
Your life is always full of changes.
You will avoid being alone and seek the company of others whenever possible.
You love excitement and create it wherever you go.
You see the world as it is, not as you believe it should be.
You added a flower into your drawing.
The flower signifies that you long for love.
We also see that you are ___________, ____________, and _________ ____________.

(I thought it wise to not include what went in the blanks. Boy, I never knew that including flowers in my yard could have such an impact!)

You don't think much about yourself.

THIS QUIZ JUST PROVED THAT I AM CAPABLE OF USING PROPER GRAMMAR IF I SIMPLY GIVE IT SOME THOUGHT!!

You Scored an A

You got 10/10 questions correct.

It's pretty obvious that you don't make basic grammatical errors.

If anything, you're annoyed when people make simple mistakes on their blogs.

As far as people with bad grammar go, you know they're only human.

And it's humanity and its current condition that truly disturb you sometimes.

Maybe Once Upon A TIme

EDT: (Saturday)
My niece Jackie doesn't think this quiz is quite accurate concerning MOI! Neither do I but the first time I took it, I came out the same as my sister, Jungle Mom!! (Who me, a deep thinker??) I knew that was messed up so I changed a couple of answers and got this outcome. I think back when I was younger and healthier, the below description did fit me better. I do love politics (political sciences)and telling people what to do (counseling???) LOL Truth is, when you consider I taught upwards to 2o children per class for oh, 16 years, and ran an in-home day care for 4 years, I guess I did have a handle on balancing many tasks at once! I just don't seems to have that "handle on it" anymore!
Your Scholastic Strength Is Inspiring Others

You are great at developing a vision, and getting others to adopt your way of thinking.
You are talented at leading, balancing tasks, and helping people work together.

You should major in:

Counseling
Environmental studies
Law
Social work
Political science
Nursing

The Book Quiz

You're Adventures of Huckleberry Finn!

by Mark Twain

With an affinity for floating down the river, you see things in black
and white. The world is strange and new to you and the more you learn about it, the less
it makes sense. You probably speak with an accent and others have a hard time
understanding you and an even harder time taking you seriously. Nevertheless, your
adventurous spirit is admirable. You really like straw hats.

Take the Book Quiz
at the Blue Pyramid.

I'd really love to hear from those of you who know me. Is this me?

Oh Dear! Should I Even Post This?

You paid attention during 74% of high school!

68-84% Pretty good, you know that there are libraries and newspapers, and you remember what you've read. You were a child that wasn't left behind!

Do you deserve your high school diploma?
Create a Quiz

I never was a good test taker. I think I would have been an awesome candidate for Homeschooling!

Speaking of tests, I've got to cut this post short so I can go take a few! Medical tests that is! The doctors have been keeping me busy lately, bless their hearts! Together, we are working to help me regain some mobility and to suffer less pain. I'm happy to report that some of the new medications I started last week are working wonders! You may be seeing less of me on line during the midnight hours and more of me during the evenings, as it should be! I am once again experiencing a wonderful thing called: SLEEP!! YES! Restful, deep sleep! It's delicious!

I have a couple of new health issues that have manifested themselves through these tests. I may share more about it later. For now, I am off for a mammogram, and a bone density scan.

I posted my pitiful quiz above for you all to play around with and see if you remember more of your high school lessons than I did.

Here's hoping you are all having a wonderful Wednesday!

INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

I have had two people so far agree to answer the interview questions that I came up with! Those two brave souls are MJ and Jen. This is open to anyone else who would like to play along. Just leave me a comment when you do it, so I will know to come and read your answers on your blog!

I agree with Susan! Thinking up some challenging questions is harder than answering them! LOL

Here goes:

1. If you could spend the day with a famous person, who is still alive today, who would it be and why?

2. How would you define the following phrase: "DYING TO SELF"?

3. Do you have a hobby or a favorite way to unwind? If so, tell us how you got started in it.

4. Name an adventure you would love to do or go on.

5. Name three things you do to encourage others.

6. Describe your church building, your pastor, and your pastor's wife.

Now you get to try to get some folks to agree to answer 5 or 6 questions which you make up!

I Think This Is More My Style...

Or is it just because the graphic reminds me of chocolate!

Your Brain's Pattern

You have a dreamy mind, full of fancy and fantasy.
You have the ability to stay forever entertained with your thoughts.
People may say you're hard to read, but that's because you're so internally focused.
But when you do share what you're thinking, people are impressed with your imagination.
Your Brain's Pattern
Your mind is an incubator for good ideas, it just takes a while for them to develop. But when you think of something, watch out!Your thoughts tend to be huge, and they come on quickly - like an explosion. You tend to be quiet around others, unless you're inspired by your next big idea.

Would I Survive In The Jungle?

I saw this quiz over at my sister's blog (Jungle Mom) and just had to do it!
Your result
You scored 14 out of 30
To others you seem to be a confident, fearless person who could easily cope with all the hazards and discomfort that time spent in the jungle might throw at them. The trouble is that while you put on a bold front, on occasion you are quaking inside. This could have you find yourself in dangerous situations that you are unable to handle. Don't be afraid to admit to being frightened at times, as other people will respect you for it.
